Wil! This totally brings back memories of my school days. I love those tin pencil cases. I remember my classmate had a bear-shaped version and I had some rectangular one with a penguin cartoon on it. We swapped from time to time, which was fun.
It also brought back memories, around the same time, as my friend and I turned our pencils into “dolls” by tying threads on the top (as hair) that we can braid, and the pencil cases became “homes” for these “dolls”. We had quite an imagination. One way of beating school rules about toys.
Those pencil cases were long gone. I still think about them from time to time. Now I have random pouches from Daiso or a travel toiletries bag as pencil case. Nothing as fun as it used to be anymore.
I had you in mind when I was writing this. I wondered what memories from your school days these cases would bring up. You must have been dear friends to be able to swap stationery. You just helped me unlock a similar memory. Thank you for sharing.
Ahh pencil cases were such a treat back then. I think I had a My Little Pony plastic one with all the fancy contraptions at one point. Those don’t last long than the tin ones. I still think about those tin ones.
Wil, this was such a good read dude. You were not joking about being deep into the rabbit hole that is pencil cases haha. Your cases are absolutely beautiful. I appreciate you sharing the stories about your middle school crush and the fountain pen your mother gave you. This was awesome.
I appreciate you coming by for the read. It's thanks to you and your note on pen cases. Otherwise, this would have never happened. You just gave me reasons to reflect, flip through old journals and relive memories.
Really enjoyed all of these trips down memory lane! It's so cool to see those vintage images - I have a very vague memory of seeing the Galaxy Express 999 anime on TV during my childhood.
The one about the Ramune pen case, coupled with the story, was extra memorable. And I love the fun case that the Pilot Custom Urushi is in. I'm still in my TSL pen case, but may need a single pen sleeve soon for something fun that's being worked on! Thank you so much for sharing this piece - it was a treat to read.
I used to shy away from nostalgia. This has slowly changed since I started writing here. In hindsight, I am surprised by how much manga and anime have shaped some early worldviews.
Knowing what I know about your upcoming fountain pen plans, many Japanese pen makers often include beautiful single pen fabric kimonos.
I grew up in Moldova and the hard cases with many compartments triggered nostalgia for me! I also had many and delighted in new ways of storing stationary supplies. Wonderful post as always! The mokeke sounds so fun!
Wow, Moldova. I assumed it was in my own tiny corner of the world and never suspected hard cases to be as far reaching. I am curious, do you have a favourite? I don't want to infer from your famous art kit.

I lived for those tricked out pencil cases with the magnetic enclosures and the secret compartments. They were so fun and colorful!
They were absolutely toys in disguise. I am sure my grades took a hit until they were banned.
